The star tiller was developed in the 1990s by the Rau company in
Weilheim (Teck) in southern Germany, to further reduce costs when sowing
by plough. Two ground-driven star rollers with a tangential penetration
angle of the tines ensure a breaking instead of cutting effect in the
soil.
The Sterntiller was mostly driven as the STF 301 in front attachment. In
this type, the rollers are oscillating and a height-adjustable leveling
bar was available to level the area.
The Sterntiller is mainly used on heavy soils, as the rollers offer
reliable self-cleaning and even hard clods are broken up reliably. It
does good preparatory work for the rotary harrow or the tine rotor.
